People frequently ask us, what can I send to South Africa…
This is a question that is hard to answer.
Shipping is expensive and often unreliable. Electronics may need adapters to work with South African power sources. Our space for storage is very limited both here and abroad. Having our volunteers purchase items in South Africa is far more practical and reliable than mailing from The States. Despite these challenges we are most importantly we are committed to the following:
Only giving to organizations that will be accountable for goods and donations (where, how and to whom they are given and why)
Not taking on a “Santa Claus” role doling out gifts, but rather becoming partners in bigger solutions providing assistance to those who are actively working toward a goal.
Therefore, our wish list is currently small. The best thing for you to do, the best thing for us and the most powerful way to help (for now) is to:

*Others are pulling groups together in their churches and schools to find other creative ways to become involved, ask us! ~ We are working with Grandmothers to create their craft businesses and have need for sewing and knitting supplies. ~A group of Prairie Village, KS school children held a bake sale and the funds they raised went directly to a group of children in Cape Town. They are now becoming Pen Pals. ~Numerous Unity Churches and other groups have made beautiful Prayer Aprons for us to gift the grandmothers in South Africa. Each apron is made with love and care and has prayers stuffed into the pockets for the gogo. ~Other groups have made lovely shawls for the gogos to show them they are loved and supported by friends in America. Be creative...there are endless ways to reach out!
The most generous way to help is to simply donate to Lovelight for our regular operations so we can become a healthy fiscally strong entity in Africa bringing a message of peace and partnership. Only 15% of all monetary donations are used for administrative expenses. |
